Operates heavy trucks and equipment to load and haul trash from transfer station to landfill in Austin.  Drives truck for residential garbage collection route.  Performs mowing and grounds maintenance; and assist with garbage collection duties. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe and bulldozer to move, load, and mash trash and brush;
  • Prepares loads for trip to landfill;
  • Picks up yard waste;
  • Drives 18-wheeler to landfill in Austin to unload solid waste as assigned;
  • Loads and hauls heavy equipment between job sites;
  • Loads mulch for customers at transfer station;
  • Inspects trucks to ensure their proper operation; performs basic maintenance such as greasing, changing oil and washing trucks, equipment and trailers;
  • Cleans areas at transfer station such as area around trailer and area where trucks unload;
  • Operates residential garbage truck, including hooking up garbage containers and dumping trash into truck;
  • Provides back up assistance at the transfer station;
  • Mows and weed eats grass;
  • Delivers garbage bags to residential customers; and
  • Assists with cardboard route as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This is a non-supervisory position.

Education and/or Experience

High school graduation or its equivalent plus two years of experience operating large trucks and equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Knowledge Of

Safe and effective operation of large trucks and equipment; basic grounds maintenance routines; safety procedures for garbage collection. 

Skill/Ability To

Safely and effectively operate large trucks, equipment, and city vehicles; read manuals, instructions, and road signs; perform basic mathematical calculations; estimate weight of loads; perform mowing and grounds maintenance; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Class B Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) required. Class A preferred or ability to obtain Class A Texas commercial driver's license (CDL).
