Under the supervision of the Utility Compliance Manager the SCADA Apprentice is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, servers, remote terminal units, and communication for the Public Utilities Department. Ensures real-time SCADA system integrity and the highest operational reliability and system availability, including performing maintenance and programming on communication components with SCADA system servers.

Starting Pay Rate: This is an hourly non-exempt position. Pay rate starts at $21.19 but may be higher for well qualified candidates DOQ.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists with maintenance and updates the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for the city's public utilities department, including installing and maintaining hardware and software.
  • Assists with the maintenance of all equipment used by SCADA that monitor the water, wastewater, electric, and gas systems of the city.
  • Assists with the designs, builds, installs, and maintains Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Programmable Logistic Units (PLCs), and Intelligent Electrical Devices (IEDs) which communicate with SCADA servers.
  • Monitors critical utility data such as water levels, flow rates, gas pressure, voltages, and amps, and creates related reports and charts.
  • Ensures connectivity between SCADA and external servers such as OMS and SCADA web server.
  • Maintains various communication systems between SCADA and RTUs which includes radio, WLAN, TCP/IP, and serial.
  • Performs regular back-ups for central computers.
  • Troubleshoots various system problems, including discussing problems with software company as needed.

This is a non-supervisory position.

Education and/or Experience

A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field is preferred, familiarity with SCADA and utility systems; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge Of

Networks and computers, including hardware and software components; electrical wiring diagrams; communication infrastructure; and electronics and fiber optics construction.

Skill/Ability To

Analyze and evaluate data; operate equipment used in computer programming; prepare concise and accurate reports; perform basic and complex mathematical calculations; read and understand policies and procedures; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships co-workers and the general public.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A valid Texas driver's license.
