Performs responsible management, technical and administrative work in developing and implementing a comprehensive fire prevention program. Under limited supervision, directs and manages the Fire Prevention Division's activities and employees; and assures Department's compliance with state and Federal laws and the public safety goals of the City.


This is the first level of inspections work. This position reviews plans, inspect, approve, or reject all phases of public and private construction and improvements to assure compliance with plans, standards, specifications, codes and regulations, permits, and any special requirements. May recommend alternative solutions and issue correction notices or approvals as appropriate, compile reports, maintain logs and records, and perform related activities. Acts as an investigator on fire scenes to determine cause and origin; enforces fire prevention codes; investigates fires; obtains and serves warrants; assists with direction of fire and rescue operations;

• Oversees and conduct fire/life safety inspections
• Oversees investigations of fire loss incidents
• Coordinates the activities of fire prevention with other programs of the Fire Department
• May represent the Fire Department before the City Council and Committees concerning fire prevention matters
• Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence
• Directs, supervises, trains, and motivates fire prevention team members, including volunteers; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures as necessary
• Meets with architects, engineers, contractors and others involved in development and construction activities affecting fire prevention
• Performs plan review and new construction inspections
• Provides technical expertise concerning fire protection infrastructure planning
• Conducts field inspections of construction projects
• Develops and maintain a variety of records and reports
• Assists in budget preparation
• Evaluates existing fire safety conditions considering federal, state, county and local codes applicable to fire safety
• Researches, presents and recommends revisions to policies, procedures and ordinances Assist with special projects, reports and studies
• Responds to citizen inquiries and resolve difficult and sensitive complaints
• Investigates fires for origin and cause, which includes evidence collection and preservation, detailed report writing and possible court testimony
• Operates emergency response vehicles

High school graduation or its equivalent plus eight years of experience in fire prevention and suppression, at least four of which involved supervision; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Intermediate firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP); TCFP inspector certification; TCFP arson investigator certification; TCFP instructor certification; and basic peace officer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE); and valid Class B Exempt Texas Driver's License
